DECA National Competition
Rev. Peter Semeyn
Junior Josh Bemister represented Timothy Christian Schools at the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) National competition held in Orlando, Florida. Josh qualified in Human Resource Management. It was the second time in three years that Timothy had members participate in the DECA National competition.
DECA is a national organization with nearly 75 years of experience in developing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. Their mission statement clarifies their purpose: “DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”
DECA was introduced to Timothy Christian High School in 2015 when Kendra Lee joined Timothy’s faculty in the business department. She had witnessed firsthand the value of DECA for high school students at her previous school and wanted to provide Timothy students with this important opportunity. She sees DECA as a means of helping students boost their self-esteem and helping them mature and develop their God-given gifts and talents. “DECA is a way to enhance the experience of students from our regular business curriculum,” Lee said. “DECA is a valuable tool in helping students put classroom lessons into practical experience.”
DECA meets after school weekly throughout the year and participates in leadership conferences, sports and entertainment marketing seminars, and competitive events.
Josh found his experience at Nationals to be enlightening, not only about business, but personally. “At DECA I realized that the Christian mindset is unique. At Timothy, I am surrounded by Christians who have similar values and perspectives,” he explained. “At Nationals, I encountered students from many different religious backgrounds and faith commitments. It was a good learning experience.”
Josh and Mrs. Lee represented Timothy at Nationals due to the generous support of the Timothy Foundation. The Timothy Foundation exists to provide support for the sustainability of Timothy Christian Schools. The Timothy Foundation continues to grow and provide support each year for tuition assistance, faculty development, funding for new programs, and other donor-selected projects.
