Who's That Girl?
Amy Bode

Meet Maddie Drye. Her schedule is packed. Jam-packed. It’s filled with Advanced Placement and Honors classes, like AP Biology, AP Statistics, AP Calculus, and AP Literature. She also plays tennis, basketball, and soccer and was the captain of both the soccer team and basketball team.

Are you keeping up?

Maddie is the president of Student Council (she’s served on it for all four years) and is involved in the student-led chapel planning committee. She also serves on the Student Dance and Activities Committee.

She was a junior leader for Wyldlife, a leader in Young Life, and attends Matt Davidson’s Unstoppable Bible Study every Wednesday morning (she’s here before the first bell even rings).

So how does she do it all?

It goes without saying: she’s driven. And she’s packed her schedule with classes that challenge her. But she’s not afraid to ask for help, because she knows all of her teachers want to see her succeed, and she can receive one-on-one help during Focus Period, study hall, and after school.

“I’m able to visit my AP Biology teacher during study hall,” Maddie explained. “This helps me stay caught up. I also take advantage of teachers making themselves available and have been able to get extra help with AP Statistics regularly during Focus Period.”

With her homework and classes under control, she can juggle all of her extracurriculars.

“One of the great things about Timothy is that all the adults in my life are mentoring me and teaching me how to manage my life outside the classroom,” Maddie said.

While every class is taught from a Christian perspective, it’s often on the field or in a club where students like Maddie grow and develop their faith. That’s why extracurriculars are so important to the high school experience.

For Maddie, her faith grew through devotions with her soccer team. “Before every home game, we shared a devotion,” she said, “and met in small groups as a team to share prayer requests and connect on a deeper level about our faith.”

Young Life was another place where Maddie’s faith grew. “Young Life especially has helped me grow — learning from Young Life leaders about their own spiritual journey and the challenges they’ve had,” she said.

It’s strong teacher/student relationships that allow students like Maddie to participate in multiple activities — and thrive! They also allow students to develop new relationships, hone their God-given talents, and prepare them for life after high school.

Maddie’s hard work has paid off. “I’m spiritually grounded,” she said. “Taking classes at Timothy like Christian Thought has not only helped me understand why I believe what I do, but it’s helped me articulate why I believe. Unstoppable has given me courage, and Wyldlife has given me the chance to form meaningful relationships with other Christians. This, more than anything, makes me feel prepared for life beyond Timothy.”
