Purposeful Wednesdays
Hope Huizenga '24

Wednesdays at Timothy Christian High School begin with a purpose. Classes do not start until 9:15 am, which is an hour later than normal. But for many of us, our day starts at 8:30 am — all by choice. This is because at 8:30 am, the school superintendent, Mr. Matt Davidson, leads a Bible study called Unstoppable.

This early morning gathering represents more than just a Bible study; it symbolizes commitment to spiritual growth and building a Christ-centered community. These students sacrifice sleep to hear the Lord’s Word before school. After every Bible study, Mr. Davidson encourages students to stay longer and engage in fellowship with one another. Sometimes he even brings breakfast for all the students!

After Unstoppable, the 9:15am bell rings, and students rush to class. Throughout the day of busy classes and extracurricular activities, anticipation builds for another gathering called Young Life. Young Life is not a single place but a community of believers. It is a worldwide Christian organization committed to reaching young students within their faith journeys through fellowship, worship, and fun. Timothy has its own Young Life chapter, and gatherings consist of Club, Campaigners, Worship Nights, and other fun events, most of which meet on Wednesday nights.

Club is called a “party with a purpose.” Students meet in the elementary school cafeteria, play fun games, dance, sing, and end their night with an inspiring talk from one of the leaders. Then, students all drive over to the Elmhurst Portillo’s and enjoy each other's company with shakes and fries.

Campaigners meet every other week and it is the Young Life Bible study. At Campaigners, students engage in prayer, discussions in small groups, and teachings from volunteer leaders. This further enhances the Christ-centered community at Timothy and gives students a support system.

This year, Timothy Christian Young Life added a Worship Night. Cassidy Block (Class of 2012), a volunteer, leads a night of worship songs and prayer. Starting this for a group of high school students was a risky endeavor. However, at the first gathering, students all sang loudly, hands raised, praising God. After the worship was over, groups of students were seen with their arms around each other in prayer. Tears were shed, and relationships were strengthened around the room, all to help conclude the perfect Wednesday night.

Young Life is not only a Wednesday thing as Timothy’s Young Life leader Eric Bando encourages the community to continue through students' everyday life. Eric shows up to the school consistently to continue to build relationships. Also, fun events go on multiple times a month with SpikeBall tournaments and trivia nights. For many students, Young Life represents a highlight of their week, a time to unwind, connect with friends, and deepen their spiritual journey.

A Wednesday in the life of a Timothy Christian student who engages in Unstoppable and Young Life exemplifies the intersection of faith and Christ-centered community within the educational setting. Wednesdays alone provided me with so many mentors who invested love and time into me. These experiences offered a sense of purpose, community, and spiritual nourishment amidst a busy life. In embracing the power of faith and Christ-centered community, high school students are not only enriching their own lives but contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the Timothy Christian community. As a 2024 graduate, I can say that I am properly equipped to go into the world as a servant-leader ready to share the Gospel.
