“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gates.” Proverbs 31: 30-31
This Bible verse is one of the many verses that the students in the ReFashion and ReNew class are studying. One student in the class, Elsa Ward, further explains what these devotions cover each day. “Every morning we do devotions,” Elsa says, “and it focuses on how to be noble as a woman and what characteristics we should have to be noble.”
The ReFashion and ReNew class also focuses on certain words in each verse that they read. The teacher of the class, Ms. Wagle, explains, “Every morning we read verses from Proverbs 31:10-31 in devotions, and then we pick words from those devotions that describe a noble woman, and what we should aspire to be.”
These are just a few of the words that cover the classroom’s whiteboard and just a few characteristics that these students are aspiring to have.
While studying these verses and the meaning of the words, the students use their many skills to create unique pieces of clothing. “We are learning about the fashion industry and how to take old clothes and upcycle them into something new,” Elsa describes.
These girls took a trip to New to You and bought shirts, pants, coats, and sweatshirts. . They then sewed them together to create new sweaters, jackets, dresses, and much more.
At the end of this process, women from Park Place came to see the creations and listened to how each student has become a stronger woman of God.
“We can have a positive impact on what people are wearing,” Elsa explains, “and we get to learn how to express our fashion sense while staying true to God.”
